    The Pearled Bridge
    A New Mafia Experience by Alisha


    Many hooded figures stood in a circle, refreshed after completing their morning ritual. The supernatural event that shook the world years ago was fresh on all of their minds.

    The Order of the Pearl is a cult that started with only one goal; find the pearl that was at the center of the supernatural event. With it they would bring great and irreversible change to the planet, and usher in a new era.

    One day, the body of one of the cult members was found. In its possession was the pearl, faintly glowing purple. The cult did a background check on the deceased member, and found them to be a government agent that went missing six months ago on an undercover assignment. This agent joined their cult six months ago.

    With the pearl in their possession, the cult now is almost ready to make their big changes. There is one massive obstacle in their way, however.

    The agent has friends, hellbent on stopping the cultists from succeeding in their goal. They are ready to murder every last cultist to prevent the pearl from being used to make devastating changes.

    And so, the sacrifices must begin.

    Foreword

    In The Pearled Bridge, you will assume the role of a cult member making sacrifices each day, trying to root out the heroic infiltrators that have snuck into their ranks. Some players are infiltrators, where at night they are killing cult members.

    Despite the setup being themed around a cult, no cult like mechanics exist in the game.

    In short, you are the bad guys, trying to identify and sacrifice the good guys. The good guys are pretending to be bad guys and are trying not to get sacrificed.

    How the Setup Works

    This is a modular setup. The roles have been constructed by combining powers and traits. The list of possible powers and traits will be provided in a followup post in this thread, but it will not be revealed how those powers and traits are distributed.

    Powers are what players have a choice with using, and are analogous to night actions in other Mafia games. Some examples of powers would be inspect, protect, and block. Powers can have limited or unlimited uses. Only one power may be used per night and you cannot self target, unless otherwise noted.

    Traits are passive alterations to a role or powers, and change how something behaves. A lot of traits are analogous to role modifiers or adjectives in other games.

    Game Concepts and the Theme

    This game is different. There are a few never-before-seen ideas and as such it would be best to be open to exploring unusual concepts and uncommon elements in Mafia games. The setup is balanced to the best of mine and Jivvi's ability and everything new about it is telegraphed by the powers and traits provided in the following post. There will be time dedicated in the signup thread to ask mechanical questions.

    This game is themed. Roles have been named according to flavor. There are no alignment or win condition changes in this game, so do not be alarmed by the cult theme. Play around with it too!

    This game has a learning curve. Since this is a new concept, I will dedicate time in the signup thread for people to ask questions about how things work, and I will be more hands-on in the PMs and Discord with answering questions and explaining concepts. If you are new or relatively inexperienced with mafia but still want to play, I still will encourage you to sign up and I'll give attention toward getting you up to speed. Since this setup isn't completely closed it's much easier for me to be informative with a lot of the core concepts here.

    We're here to have fun. I designed this setup with hopes that everyone that signs up can find something about it to enjoy.

    Rules

    Taken from mine and GmK's write-ups, formatted, and condensed a little. Please give them a look.

    Be respectful and polite.​
    • Do not edit posts. Make a double/triple/quadruple/penta post instead. Even if your forum rank and permissions will let you edit or delete posts, please do not use them.
    • You are not allowed to make last statements after you are dead.
    • If you have not signed up to play mafia, do not post in the game thread.
    • Do not rate posts after you die. It is also preferable to post instead of rate when possible when alive.
    • You are not allowed to use the -In a conversation- status as a tool against someone.
    • Do not look at posts that have been marked as deleted, even if you have permissions otherwise.


    Honesty and Cheating​
    • In all interactions with the moderator, you must be honest.
    • Do not contact any player in or outside of the game about the game unless specifically allowed to by the moderator.
    • Do not attempt to access another player's information by technological means (such as hacking).
    • Do nothing that would be considered cheating. Use common sense.


    Gaming the System​
    • Do not quote your role PM, take a screen capture of it, etc. You may paraphrase the role PM.
    • Do not attempt to analyze the mechanics of a role PM in comparison to other players. For example, "the fourth word of my role PM is town." Or "my PM was sent at 11:23, when was yours?"
    • No outside bets or other contrivances should be made.
    • At no time should there be pre-game alliances made.
    • If you are confused about an aspect of your role, ask your host about it in a private channel. Do not ask about it in the game thread.


    Activity​
    • You are expected to be an active participant in your game. Do not flake.
    • If you know you are going to be absent a particular amount of time, post in game and PM the moderator that you will be V/LA. Please include the date you plan to be back and posting.

    Behavior​
    • No excessive racist, homophobic, sexist, etc. language may be used.
    • Harassment of an individual player is NOT permitted. It is the nature of the game that players will be antagonistic toward each other at times. However, it should always be kept in the spirit of a game.
    • Always play to your win condition. Never sabotage your team's chances simply because you're angry at them. This includes self votes and the like.

    The Moderator​
    • The Moderator will post frequent vote counts.
    • The moderator reserves the right to alter any rule in the game including any of the rules found in this document.
    • If the moderator makes a mistake on a vote count, please address it in thread in bold.
    • PM the moderator with other concerns.
    • The moderator has the final say.


    Quitting​
    • When you sign up, it is expected you are capable of remaining interested in the game throughout its run.
    • If you have decided you can no longer be a part of this wonderful adventure, send a private message to the moderator announcing you are leaving.
    • Under no circumstances are you to reveal your role when you quit, and you should not talk about your role while the game is still running.

    Mechanical Information

    The Uninformed Majority - The Order of the Pearl

    • Role names are generally cult or mean person themed.

    Win Condition - All threats to The Order are eliminated with at least one member of your faction left alive.

    The Informed Minority - Lawful Infiltrators

    • Role names are generally law or nice person themed.

    Win Condition - Gain control of the vote with all threats to the Infiltrators eliminated.

    Third Parties

    • One or more third party may exist, and will have one of the following win conditions.

    • All third parties leave the game if they complete their win condition before the game ends.

    • All third parties are threats to every faction.

    • Role names are different.

    Potential third party win conditions

    • Be alive when only two players or less remain in the game.

    • Nightkill [x] number of players.

    • Obtain [x] amount of powers.

    • Successfully deplete all powers in your possession.

    • Visit all other players currently alive.


    List of Possible Traits

    Traits are ordered alphabetically.

    Alternating
    On Role: You may not use the same power twice in a row, or you may be told you can only use a power on odd/even nights.
    On Power: This power may not be used on consecutive nights, or you may be told you can only use this power on odd/even nights.

    Ascetic
    On Role: All powers used against you fail, except for powers that involve inflicting a lethal attack or trait modification. Overrides block.

    Backup
    On Role: Your assigned powers at the start of the game cannot be used until a specific role dies.
    On Power: This power cannot be used until a specific role dies.

    Bleeder
    On Role: Lethal attacks against you are delayed by one night, and you are immune to all subsequent lethal attacks. Does not apply to being lynched, and your death the following night cannot be prevented.

    Careful
    On Role: When a power you've used fails or your target dies by other means in the same night, you do not consume a use of it and will find that out the following night.
    On Power: If this power fails or your target dies by other means in the same night, it does not decrement in uses and will be told to you the following night.

    Compulsive
    On Role: If you have powers, you must use one each night.

    Efficient

    Indecisive [X]
    On Role: Powers may not be used on the same player for consecutive nights. This trait may specify a number of levels, indicating how many night actions will be affected until depleted.
    On Power: This power may not be used to target the same player for consecutive nights.

    Self-Targeter

    Shared Result
    On Role: Your system message results from your powers are broadcasted to your entire faction.
    On Power: Your system message results from this power are broadcasted to your entire faction.

    Speech Compulsion
    On Role: You must satisfy a specific phrase or other oddity in your posts. Failure to do so may have negative consequences outlined in your role message. Alternately, succeeding in following your compulsion may have positive consequences outlined in your role message. All system messages concerning a speech compulsion are to be kept private. Acknowledging you have a speech compulsion in any way counts as an automatic failure.

    Stealth [X]
    On Role: Your powers do not count as night visits. This trait may have a number that indicates the number of night actions worth of this trait you have.
    On Power: This power does not count as a night visit.
    System Message: Beginning of following night

    Unstoppable [X]
    On Role: Your powers cannot be altered or negated in any way, and overrides all other properties that would otherwise prevent them. This trait may have a number that indicates the number of night actions worth of this trait you have.
    On Power: This power cannot be altered or negated in any way, and overrides all other properties that would otherwise prevent it.
    Exception: Powers that rely on guessing such as RID can still fail upon an incorrect guess.

    List of Possible Powers

    Powers are sorted and classified by type, and the order of the types is the night action hierarchy. (Ex. What class of night actions happen before other actions).
    Power Blocking

    Block
    Visit one player and cause powers they use to automatically fail.
    Fail Condition: Your target has no powers that can fail.

    Jail
    Visit one player, protecting them from lethal attacks and causing their powers to automatically fail.
    Fail Condition: No lethal attacks are used against your target, and your target has no powers that can fail.

    Trait and Power Modification

    Conceal
    Visit one player and inflict the 'Stealth' trait on them for their next use of a power. The trait can be activated on the same night it was given. The player will be informed of the change at the start of the following night.
    System Message: Targeted Player on beginning of following night

    Confuse
    Visit one player and inflict the 'Indecisive' trait on them for their next use of a power. The trait can be activated on the same night it was given. The player will be informed of the change at the start of the following night.

    Hide
    Protect yourself from lethal attacks, and all powers used against you for the night will automatically fail.

    Visit one player and learn their alignment. Third parties show up as part of the uninformed majority.

    Fail Condition: Your guess is incorrect.

    Poison
    Visit one player. The following night, a lethal attack is executed to eliminate them from the game.

    Prime
    Visit one player. That player is now considered to doused in gasoline. Primed targets can be changed but require use of an additional night action.

    RID Kill
    Visit one player and guess their role name. If the sequence of letters you used to guess matches your target's role name with at least a 60% degree of accuracy, use a lethal attack to eliminate them from the game.
    Fail Condition: Your guess is incorrect.

    TID Kill
    Visit one player and guess their role traits. If you are correct, use a lethal attack to eliminate them from the game.
    Fail Condition: Your guess is incorrect.

    What you know about the setup

    Gameplay Information
    • In addition to a shared kill, the informed minority have access to a shared 1x Careful Unstoppable RID Kill.
    • The informed minority and third parties will be given additional information to aid them with integrating into the theme.
    • All roles have at least one trait or power.
    • Not all catalogued traits and powers will be present.
    • Trait and Power changes as a result of game mechanics are not announced upon night resolution, changes are announced at the beginning of the following night.
    • Game will begin with a timed day 0 with no possibility of extension.
    • Once a limited power is used, it is gone no matter what other powers interact with it. Only with the Careful trait will fail conditions come into play.
    • Specific beats general. For example, most powers mention night visiting. Someone with the Stealth trait applied to one of those powers would not count as a night visit.
    • All nights will last a minimum of 24 hours.

    System Information
    • Anything I say or do in private messages or Discord chats may not be directly quoted, and fall along the usual guidelines for PM mechanics. If you want to paraphrase a private question I answered, ask me directly for a confirmation and outline your intended main thread message beforehand.
    • Let me know what mode of communication you prefer for system message delivery in your signup post. Both have benefits and drawbacks. (Discord messages are faster but could get lost in other conversations, Forum PMs are slower but are easier to look back upon)
    • Sharing system messages is strictly not allowed.

    Sign Up Process and Host Information

    Jivvi helped a lot with balancing the setup, and gave a lot of good feedback. He's currently very busy with uni, so for now consider me the sole host for purposes of thread announcements and moderation, private messages, and Discord questions. If Jivvi survives uni we'll see how it turns out!

    Player Count and Signup Guide

    The minimum number of players required is 16, up to a maximum of 21.

    When you sign up, you are indicating that you will be fine with any role you may randomly receive. You also are showing you will stay active and interested throughout the game's run.

    The game is open to all with a preference for experience, and I reserve the right to have the final say with the player roster.

    Game Start Process

    Once everyone has signed up, I will keep the thread open for around 24 hours for a public question and answering session. This is the best way to clear up any mechanical confusion or possible inconsistencies before all questions become loaded once you receive your role.

    After signups are closed, I will send your role information through your preferred mode of communication. This includes your role name, win condition, and your selection of powers and traits. You will be required to respond indicating you understand your role before the game may begin.

    I should be able to keep up activity, but that doesn’t change the fact I do have rather important exams going on, so if I go inactive without notice you may assume life hit me like a brick wall, and act accordingly.

    This set-up is really detailed and terrifyingly complicated; looks interesting to play, but this is a lot more intimidating than expected ^_^’

    You and everyone else are welcome to ask as many questions here or on Discord as you like! The sheer amount of information admittedly does look daunting, but in practice it should be easier to digest. By necessity the signups needed every possibility accounted for in writing.

    Yeah I know I've said this multiple times before, but in the interest of making things as easy as possible for everyone I am happy to clear up any sources of confusion that arise.

    Once everyone gets their role I'll be available during role confirmations and walk anyone through how everything concerning their role works if they need it. That's why I'm asking for an in-PM role confirmation instead of in-thread since I want everyone to be up to speed before we start posting.

    Also sweet 14 people so far, let's get to 16 and see if we make it to 21, then I'll work with those of you that specified your inactivity concerns and see what the best solution is there!
