Welcome to a
Zombie Survival Guide!
Here you will learn the basics of the Zombie Survival Server and some tricks to use during a game.
(The commands and certain words are colored to make reading easier)

Let's get Started.
Getting Started :
One of the first things you have to do is join the server. The Server name looks like this

Since the Zombie Survival Server is relatively popular, the server will often be full (35/35). If you can't get in the server, keep trying!
Quick note: The WoM client (World of Minecraft client) is NOT ALLOWED on this server. If you wish to play on it though, you must type /client hacks off
and relog to enable the regular minecraft.net physics. If you are on the minecraft.net browser, you have nothing to worry about.

If you are new to the server, the first thing you should do is type /rules. If you are fairly knowledgeable with the rules, you should still read this section to refresh your memory. Otherwise, read on.
The rules (as of December 10th 2011) are listed below and the significance of them.
Server Rules:
1. Only referees may use hacks
Basically, don't use hacks. The only people who are able to use hacks are people with Green names (Operators), Dark green names (Veteran Operators), Blue names (Controllers or Head Controllers), and sometimes, Black names (Nobody). If you are caught using hacks (and if you're not a referee), you will be banned.

2. Humans must be reachable w/o building and at all times
If you are a human, you must be able to be tagged by a zombie without building. If you are on top of a block in the air without any possible way to you without building, you are unreachable. If you have a jump course that leads to you, but you erase the path when a zombie comes, you are still considered unreachable. Even if you are unreachable for half a second, it's still considered breaking the rules and will be warned/kicked for it. Additionally, if you make someone else unreachable, you can still get warned for making them illegal. A "legal" jump course consists of jumps that are all possible without building. A 1 gap jump, 2 gap jump, 1 up 1 gap jump, and even 1 up 2 gap jumps are legal. But remember, keep the amount of 1 up 2 gap jumps to moderation. 1-3 is a good amount. This is a poor example of a "fair" jump course and should be avoided.

3 gap jumps are not legal, so make sure you have a legal jump if you are on a jump course.
One last thing about this rule : If a zombie is coming and you place a block in their path to make them fall, it's basically the same thing as being unreachable for a second. This is to make the game play fair. If a zombie repeatedly falls because of a human that blocks their jump multiple times, it wouldn't be fair for the zombie. It's the same thing if you have 2 different paths to you. Even though you can spleef 1 path if a zombie comes since you're still legal, it is recommended you don't to keep game play fair.

3. Do not spleef/push your own team
If you intentionally push a teammate off a block, it is considered breaking this rule. If you break a block under a teammate causing them to fall, it is also against this rule. While you can't spleef/push your own team, you CAN spleef the enemy team if it doesn't make anyone unreachable or illegal. (Zombies can spleef humans, humans can spleef zombies. Humans can't spleef humans, zombies can't spleef zombies).

4. ANY form of PILLAR/TOWER is forbidden!
Anything that is more than 3 blocks in a vertical line is considered a tower. If you pillar 3 blocks up, you must still be reachable without building. Here are some examples of ILLEGAL forms of towers.
The regular tower. Not allowed under any circumstances
Even though it's a 2 block tower, it's still illegal
If you make a figure that resembles this, it's still illegal. Refrain from making these types of towers

5. No holes smaller than 2x2x2 are allowed
Your hole must have the dimensions of 2 width, 2 height, and 2 length to be legal. This is a good representation of a legal hole.

However, if you have an opening (where you can walk out without breaking a block) or you are easily seen (by leaves or by glass), it is legal. This is an example of a hole that is less than 2 x 2 x 2, but still legal since it is easily seen.

There is a common misconception that this is legal (If the top was sealed)
But unfortunately, it's not legal

6. Do not abuse any flaws, glitches, or bugs
Abusing any glitches or bugs include respawning, lag pillaring, or glitching through blocks which are meant to not be able to be modified (op_blocks). If you somehow get pushed into an inaccessible area (After being bit by a zombie or respawning), the first thing you should do is to tell an operator+. If you are caught by an operator in an inaccessible area, you will almost always be warned or kicked since you didn't report it to an operator beforehand. If a referee isn't online at the time, the best option is to rejoin the server to prevent being warned if one does happen to show up. NEVER try respawning to get back into a legal area. This leads to more glitch abusing and is frowned upon.
Lag pillaring is when you try pillaring with blocks you don't have, or you try to pillar where blocks can't be modified (Runner maps). Type "/runner" to see how much blocks you have. Especially as a zombie, if you have no blocks left, you should never glitch abuse to get to an area faster or to bite a human.
Finally, if you glitch into a block that you're not able to modify (op_stone, adminium blocks, op_glass) and stay there, you can be warned or kicked from it.

7. Do not use excessive language. Do not insult.
Self-explanatory. Do not use any insults towards a fellow player or staff. No matter how lightly you say it or if you're joking, a staff member can see it differently and can warn or kick you for it depending on the seriousness.

8. All jumps must be 2 spaces apart or less
Relating to rule number 2, you cannot have jumps on a jump course that is more than 2 gaps apart.

9. Show good sportsmanship, and use common sense
This rule is usually the one that is most broken on the server. The basic definition of this rule is to not do anything that might be unsportsmanlike. If you happen to use language frequently (saying bad words after each game or after you get bitten) or if you say anything that might be inappropriate or unnecessary, you will be warned, kicked, and eventually banned. If you happen to be warned for a rule, you can question an operator on why, but never argue that you shouldn't have been warned, as it could lead to more warns and kicks.
The server attracts people from all ages, specifically the younger age groups (lower than 13 years old) so make sure you don't say excessive language or inappropriate comments. Trolling is highly frowned upon on this server and is one of the worst things to be warned on. Sure you can play around with other players you're familiar with or joke around. But never take it to a higher level by making fun of them repeatedly or by making people feel bad.
Being a backseat operator is not recommended to any players. If an operator is handling a situation with a rule breaker, the last thing you should do is explain what they did wrong and basically repeat what the operator said. Let an operator do their job quickly and efficiently without causing additional problems.
No advertising other servers. Unless the server is approved of by the community (Ex. Other blocktopia servers or build servers that have connections with blocktopia), you shouldn't publicly announce to everyone on going to a server. If you must contact a friend online, you should tell them by sending a private message. This does NOT mean to send a message to everyone on the server.
Common sense means to not say or do anything that would cause anyone from having a good experience or a fair game play. Another form of common sense is using colors or spamming. Never use colors since it would clog the chat screen with unnecessary information. Spamming can differ between each operator, as everyone has different opinions on a topic. This is an example of spamming
[Player]: NOOOOOOOOOO(x50)
If you ask an operator whether or not something is legal and they say yes, the best thing to do is not do it after that game. Let's pretend we're in a scenario where a player is in a very abnormally sized hole (maybe 1 width, 2 height, and 30 length) and an operator says they're legal. Then the next game, that operator leaves the server and another comes online. When the new operator checks your spot, they might say that it's illegal due to their personal opinion on it. If you're unsure about a hole, it's highly recommended to ask an operator if the hole is legal BEFORE they come check you to prevent any warns or kick in the latter portions of the game. This does not mean to ask an operator if a hole is legal every game. It means to not use that type of hole as frequent. If you're unsure about a hole, you should make it so that it meets the minimum requirements of a legal hole (2 x 2 x 2, easily seen, or you can walk out of it). Even though this relates to rule 2, if you argue with an operator whether or not a hole is legal or not, you can be warned for rule 9 for not being sportsmanlike.

10. Speak English in public chat
You must speak English in the main chat during any time. If you must talk to someone else in any language besides English, it is recommended to private message them instead of doing so on the main chat.

11. All clients except Minecraft.net are banned
This basically says that any clients that gives you any advantage (WoM client, hacking clients, clients with texture packs that sees through blocks) and you are caught because of it, you can be banned fairly quicker than the other rules since you are altering the course of game play.

12. All camouflage skins are banned
This says that you can't have any skins that blends into anything that causes the zombies from seeing you. This includes cobblestone skins, anything that resembles the current zombie skins, or anything that might blend into a block.

Congratulations on reading the rules! (Or if you just skipped over it).
Now that you understand the rules better, it's time to understand the game and what you do.

There are two different "teams" in a game. There are the humans, which have white colored names, and zombies, which have red colored names. The humans run or hide from zombies until the time limit is up. The time limit is usually 10 minutes long, but can sometimes be 8 or 11 minutes. The zombies try to bite all the humans before time is up. If humans survive until the time ends, they win! But if the zombies bite all of the humans before the time ends, the zombieswin!
After 50 seconds after a map has finished, everyone starts out as a human and tries to run away from the spawn as far as possible, or to find a hole to hide in. After these 50 seconds, a zombie is chosen by random! If you happen to join a game while it's still going, you will automatically start out as a zombie until the game ends, in which you can become a human again.
For a more specific explanation on these teams, click the separate spoilers to learn more about the role of a human or a zombie.

As a human you...
Welcome to the section on Zombie survival about the role of humans!
As a human, you have a white name similar to this player here:

It is your goal to live through the zombie apocalypse until time ends.
Since humans can't kill zombies, they have a small advantage to use. While zombies can only use 3 blocks to place, humans have 50 blocks to use in a game. Within the 50 seconds you have before a random zombie is chosen, you can run to a spot where you feel safe, make a jump course, or find an appropriate hole.
The first zombie was chosen! What do you do?
Zombies can bite humans by simply running into them. So the goal of a human is to dodge all of the zombies (while following the rules) until time runs out. The humans win if there is at least 1 person on the human team that is still alive. The zombies win if there are no survivors before time ends, and leads to a new game. You can fool zombies by running in a direction, then going in the opposite if they are too close to you.
There are secrets on some maps which are usually tricky to find and can help you survive longer. Use these to your advantage to hide from zombies.
I got bit by a zombie! What now?
To see what you do as a zombie, read the next section on the role of zombies!

As a zombie you...
Welcome to the section on Zombie survival about the role of zombies!
As a zombie, you have a red name similar to this player here:

It is your goal to bite all of the humans before time ends. To infect a human, simply run into them to bite. Since it is difficult to chase a single human alone, try getting more zombies to help you on biting the human by cornering and trapping them. As a zombie, you can only place 3 blocks to help get a human. While this might seem little, it can aid you if you are having trouble with a difficult jump, or you wish to get to a place faster. To find humans, you should scan your mouse cursor over walls and the ground as you can see human names if your cursor is on them. If you are a zombie, experienced players will try to trick you by making you go in the opposite direction of them. Try predicting their moves before they even do it to ensure a quick kill.

As you play more and more matches as a zombie or as a human, you receive "karma", which is a point system on the server. These points reflect your ability on gaining kills or by surviving longer. There are certain ways to achieve karma.
As a human, you receive karma from surviving longer and
As a zombie, you receive karma from killing more humans.
Every minute, there will be a notification on how much time there is left. As a human, you receivekarma for every 3 minutes you survive (9 minutes left, 6 minutes left, 3 minutes) and if you survive the round. As a zombie, you can receive karma from consecutive kills (Getting 2 or more humans in a row before any other zombie does) and by biting more humans. You get karma every 2 bites starting from the 4th (You get karma at the 4th kills, 6th, 8th, etc.) and so on.

The commands you can use as a human/zombie are listed below.
"/who" or "/players" - Shows the people on the server and what rank they have (Humans, zombies, operators,)
"/time" - Shows the amount of time left
"/rules" - Shows the rules on the server
"/whois [playername]" - Displays statistics on amount of times survived, people killed, karma, etc.
"/board" - Shows the leader board on karma
"/runner" - Shows how much blocks you have left
"/me" - Shows what rank you are (humans, zombie, staff rank)
"/me (message)" - comes up as *(player name) (message)
"/afk [message]" - Shows that you are afk (away from keyboard) then the reason if added
"/g (mapname)" - Goes to a map if it is loaded (Happens after a game ends)
"/(block name)" - Every block you place will appear as the block you typed in. (Example: if you typed /dirt, every block from there will be placed as a dirt block)
"/abort" or "/a" - Aborts all your actions (useful if you used /dirt or any other occurring command)
"/about" or "/b"- On the next block clicked, you will see the properties of that block (block name, etc.)
"/aka" - Toggles player names to see their real names despite being zombies
"/fixplayers" - Fixes player positions and sometimes ghosts that might appear on a player's screen
"/left" - Sees the humans that are still alive
"/kills" - To see how much kills you have
"/unloaded" - Sees the map list
"/mapinfo" - Sees the map name, author, physics, etc.
"/timeonline [player]" - Checks the timeonline on a player
"/awards [player]" - Checks the player's awards
"/whisper (playername) (message)" or "@(playername) (message)" - Sends a message to that player
"@@h (message)" - Sends a message to all humans
"@@z (message)" - Sends a message to all zombies
"#(message)" - Sends a message to all operators (Use for emergencies)
There are different modes on the zombie server you play on. The two different modes the players can play on are the powerpill and hardcore modes. Read the specific explanations of the different modes below :

Powerpill mode
Powerpill mode has been activated! What happens now?
In the powerpill mode, the roles of zombies and humans are reversed. As a human, you now CHASE zombies, and zombies now RUN from humans. Only veteran operators and higher can change the mode to this, so don't be afraid of a sudden change if none are online. It is recommended to not ask for powerpills, as it is supposed to be a random mode. During the powerpill mode, the roles can be re-switched back and forth over and over again depending on how many times it is changed. It is usually triggered when there are low amounts of humans left after only a few minutes in the map.

Hardcore mode
Hardcore mode has been activated! What happens now?
Unlike the powerpill mode, there is a more complex system in the hardcore mode. In this mode, you feel as if you are part of a real apocalypse. Humans are automatically switched to the human chat (@@h) and can only talk to humans. Zombies are automatically switched to the zombie chat (@@z) and can only talk to zombies. Unlike the regular and powerpill modes, you are restricted to only a few commands. You no longer have the ability to use /aka, to see player names and if they are zombies or not. You cannot use /time or /players anymore either, so no one knows if the other person is a zombie or not or how much time is left. The different characteristic about this mode is that humans can't even see other human names. All human names are converted to the name _Mortal_ which makes it hard to identify a player on sight.
So how much time or how many players are left?
If you press "tab", you can see all of the players on the server, but cannot see their names. You can count how many humans are left and try to predict the amount of time left and how much time has passed since the game has started. Like the powerpill mode, it is toggled on and off by a veteran operator or higher and occurs in random times.

Congratulations on finishing the guide! You can now play on the server without worrying about information. To see the frequently asked questions on the server, read on to the last section. Otherwise, have fun and enjoy your experience on the server!

Frequently asked questions
How do I get a rank on the server?
You first achieve the rank of trusted on the server. Trusteds are stepping stones to operators and warn and kick rulebreakers. These players help out operators or higher if they are busy or not available. To achieve trusted, you must apply using the format from this link http://blocktopia.net/forum/threads/trusted-application-format.143/ .
Remember, you must have at least 1 month of playtime, be mature, respectful, follow the rules, and have at least 2 references, good luck!

How do I bite humans?
Simply walk into them by touching them when you're a zombie.

How many blocks do I have?
Type /runner to check the amount of blocks you have. As a human, you start out with 50 blocks and as a zombie, you start out with only 3.

I want to ask an operator for a reference. How should I do it?
After meeting the requirements, you should private message an operator you trust that will give a reference. Remember you must have a decent amount of time online per week as activity is mandatory for the server.

I just got warned/kicked, what do I do?
Since you got warned or kicked, you probably broke one of the rules. Type /rules to see what rule you might have broken. If you can't find it, calmly ask the warning operator on what rule you were warned for and never argue on why you shouldn't have been.

I got banned from the server, what now?
If you got banned, the last thing you should do is lie on what you did. If you deny on breaking a rule, it can lead to a longer ban or even a permanent ban. You should never try ban evading also. Ban evading is when you log onto the server with an alternate account while you're banned. If you don't know why you got banned, simply state in the ban appeals you don't know, and the problem will be resolved. If you received a ban length from the banning operator, you should accept it and prevent any more problems to prevent a longer ban length.

No staff members are online and there are lots of rulebreakers, what do I do?
If a staff member isn't online, you should try pinging (Notifying a player by saying their full name) them on the IRC (Internet Relay Chat). If you can't seem to get someone, you should take a screenshot of them breaking the rules and report it to a staff member.

I want to see if something is legal or not (A hole size, a jump course, etc.), what should I do?
If you are not sure if you are in a legal position, you should ask an operator to help you determining if it's legal. If there are no operators online, you should play it safe and make sure it's legal to prevent being warned if one does come online. This does not mean to ask an operator every game, as it can get tiring for the operators.

Is that person hacking?
First you must identify if the player is even there or not. The first thing you should do is type/fixplayers. This will sometimes cause the player to disappear and you can go back to playing. If a player is not moving and is suspended in midair even after you type /fixplayers, it might be a ghost. A ghost is a player that has timed out and is not really there. If the player has a green name, they are a referee and are not playing. Referees watch over the game and make sure people don't break the rules. If you're still not sure if a player is hacking, ask an operator to verify.

I think an operator is hiding but I don't know their name. What should I do?
Use the opchat (#[message]) and ask for an operator, or say "I need help from an operator" or something similar on the main chat.

Does any operator think I'm ready for trusted?
The rank of trusted is a challenge that you have to make yourself. If you are willing to go for it and you think you are helpful enough, other operators can reference you if they are positive you'll be a good trusted. But you shouldn't ask someone else to make that decision for you.

How long did it take to make this guide?
A few hours ;).

Quick Thanks
Mysteltain - Being my test subject in the screenshots
Marskid - Being afk and letting me take a screenshot of you

Just wondering, how would that tower with the stairs leading to it be illegal? It is, technically, reachable.

I love my cameo.

I also think you forgot the /kills command, which allows you to see how many kills you have as a zombie.
