I have new computer capable to run all newest games (except Minecraft).
My specs are:
Windows 7 Ultimate 32-bit.
CPU Type (processor)
--Intel Core i3 3220 CPU @3.3 GHz duo-core.
RAM
--4096 MB
Motherboard
--Some modern one, that supports i7 Intel processors too :D
Graphics
--GeForce GTX 550 Ti
Hard Drive
--80 GB HDD (don't need huge hard disks :p)
Audio
It has sound :p

Processor and RAM were both rated 7.2 by system, and graphic card got 7.4

But even without any mods and with 1.5 GB allocated memory I still get out of memory crashes
on Far setting...

What I can do? Play at minimal settings?

I assume you use optifine?

Use Magic launcher to launch your mc with optifine. When you open Maguc launcher you press "Setup".
Then you press the "Advanced". In the memory box there you put in 512. This usually help.

How much you got allocated?
Now I changed lines in .bat file to: "%programfiles%\java\jre6\bin\javaw" -Xmx512M -Xms512M -jar minecraft.exe

It treats like Xmx was at one GB and Xms not defined - it builds up over time.
No out of memory crashes for now.

EDIT: Turned all settings to max, render distance is on Far.
No crashes for now. Looks like MC/Java/OpenGL/something doesn't like allocating lot of memory.

Perhaps you should try playing on a lower fog distance, and see how that runs.

Could be that it has nothing to do with the fog distance.
Its recommended in the optifine thread to set it to 512, might be optifine that does it, not sure.
I set that to 512. No crashes for now.
And all settings are on maximum.
