I don't know if this is intended, but I've found that straight-up punching mobs does about as much damage as hitting them with a stone sword, but fists are faster than swords.
Either way, it kind of discourages me from fighting mobs with a sword.
This might be different for melee classes, but I have no idea, since I'm still just a citizen.
