Whitelist?

Hi. Sorry if I have put this in the wrong place, I am new to the server.
When I try to connect to the SMP server, smp.blocktopia.net, I am greeted by a message saying "Disconnected- not whitelisted" or words to that effect.
What is a whitelist, and why is it here? I find no mention of it on the forums, the wiki or anywhere else for that matter.
Note: If I have the wrong IP, please point me to the correct one.

SMP is being replaced by a new server, Journey to Elysium. It's whitelist-only right now as the staff are still setting it up. The whitelist means that only certain people who are 'whitelisted' are allowed to connect.

Ah, so that's what this "JtE" thing going around right now is all about. Will there still be survival, factions, pvp and towns? I look forward to it.

Elysium will be a survival server, yes. I don't entirely know about the factions, but there will be towns and a PvP world, as well as a PvE (Player vs Environment) world for those who don't want to PvP.
