It sounds pretty neat. There was a TV mod some time ago that did a similar type of deal. However, that mod would get pretty laggy. I'm not sure how this mod will function exactly, but Minecraft isn't the most stable viewing platform for a movie.

It will most likely be fine, this exact thing has been done in Gmod and low FPS users can run it too without too many problems.

It requires a client-side mod. Therefore, during this time, only players with the mod would be able to enter the servers.

I think the best way to do this, given it will be put into play, is to make a temp-server in which movies are streamed in a themed place, that is somewhere in the lobby and will be set up in time.
