I'd prefer PvP instead of lava buckets allowed, to be honest.

Then again, more people would probably die in the beginning.

But better than lava, because with lava you lose your items when you die, but if you don't burn then you could get stuff from people, makes it more interesting.

I'd rather PvP be not allowed. too many people would kill eachother right into it. Really, it wouldn't be survival, rather than just people all killing eachother at the beginning and a lot of hiding

How about, after a certain amount of time, PvP gets turned on? If you don't have lava buckets, there's no way to kill one another. Setting a delay would give people time to setup and be able to defend themselves, and you wouldn't have everyone die in the beginning.
