[BCOLOR=transparent]KOTL Map Making Competition[/BCOLOR]
[BCOLOR=transparent]
[/BCOLOR]
[JUSTIFY][BCOLOR=transparent]Welcome to the first ever competition for KOTL arenas on RoF! Assuming the allure of prizes was too much for you, let’s dive right into those: [/BCOLOR]
[/JUSTIFY]
[BCOLOR=transparent] [/BCOLOR]

[BCOLOR=transparent]First place will receive:[/BCOLOR]
  • [BCOLOR=transparent][BCOLOR=transparent]€15 to spend on Steam; on any amount of games you wish and redeemable at any time (you’re allowed to wait until your favourite game is on sale!)[/BCOLOR][/BCOLOR]
  • [BCOLOR=transparent][BCOLOR=transparent]A custom login message![/BCOLOR][/BCOLOR]
  • [BCOLOR=transparent][BCOLOR=transparent]A custom logout message![/BCOLOR][/BCOLOR]
  • [BCOLOR=transparent][BCOLOR=transparent]1400 cookies![/BCOLOR][/BCOLOR]
  • [BCOLOR=transparent][BCOLOR=transparent]25 Ascension Tokens[/BCOLOR][/BCOLOR]

[BCOLOR=transparent] [/BCOLOR]

[BCOLOR=transparent]Second place will receive: [/BCOLOR]
  • [BCOLOR=transparent][BCOLOR=transparent]First pick from a list of games[/BCOLOR][/BCOLOR]
  • [BCOLOR=transparent][BCOLOR=transparent]A custom logout message![/BCOLOR][/BCOLOR]
  • [BCOLOR=transparent][BCOLOR=transparent]1000 cookies[/BCOLOR][/BCOLOR]
  • [BCOLOR=transparent][BCOLOR=transparent]15 Ascension Tokens[/BCOLOR][/BCOLOR]

[BCOLOR=transparent]Third place will receive:[/BCOLOR]
  • [BCOLOR=transparent][BCOLOR=transparent]Second pick from a list of games[/BCOLOR][/BCOLOR]
  • [BCOLOR=transparent][BCOLOR=transparent]500 cookies[/BCOLOR][/BCOLOR]
  • [BCOLOR=transparent][BCOLOR=transparent]5 Ascension Tokens[/BCOLOR][/BCOLOR]

[BCOLOR=transparent]Rest assured, even if your arena does not win it may still get added into the KOTL rotation. There are a few regulations which you need to keep in mind, however: [/BCOLOR]
  • [BCOLOR=transparent][BCOLOR=transparent]The players’ spawns must have bedrock.[/BCOLOR][/BCOLOR]
  • [BCOLOR=transparent][BCOLOR=transparent]The map can be any size and players can spawn anywhere, although it’s wise to keep your KOTL map around the same size as the current ones. Bigger or smaller ones might not work. Ideally, include 4 spawns in your map. [/BCOLOR][/BCOLOR]
  • [BCOLOR=transparent][BCOLOR=transparent]Players should have an initial spawnzone in which they are safe from PvP, before they can enter the actual arena.[/BCOLOR][/BCOLOR]
  • [BCOLOR=transparent][BCOLOR=transparent]You have creative license to make whatever you please! We just need some awesome, beautiful and engaging arenas. We’ll be looking for quality, gameplay, uniqueness and creativity, level of challenge and simplicity.[/BCOLOR][/BCOLOR]
  • [BCOLOR=transparent][BCOLOR=transparent]Try to be innovative! It doesn't have to be a ladder: You can use parkour, vines, slime blocks, literally anything you can think of![/BCOLOR][/BCOLOR]
[BCOLOR=transparent]Be sure to check out the map submission format, as it’s been updated to comply with KOTL. You can find a few more tips on there![/BCOLOR]

[BCOLOR=transparent]You are allowed to submit multiple arenas. [/BCOLOR]

[BCOLOR=transparent]You have 20 days to submit your map, meaning the deadline for submissions will be [/BCOLOR]

[BCOLOR=transparent]JULY 31ST[/BCOLOR]

[BCOLOR=transparent]After the competition ends, map submissions will remain open for KOTL arenas. You will be able to continuously submit new ones, even after the competition has ended. [/BCOLOR]

Best of luck to anyone entering this competition, and remember:
If your map gets rejected in this competition, it is compulsory you are sacrificed to our Lord and Saviour Avallis.

[BCOLOR=transparent]May the odds be forever in your favour.[/BCOLOR]
[BCOLOR=transparent](O[/BCOLOR][BCOLOR=transparent]mg super, did you really reference a movie released 4 years ago)[/BCOLOR]

To clarify:
You don't necessarily need to build upon the original structure. It can be the same size, the same shape-- but it doesn't have to be. You want it to be a hill instead of a ladder? Okay. Go for it. Just make sure that the "winning position" is marked clearly-- the exact block players need to stand on to win.

Here's an album with some of the current KOTLs. As you can see, most of them are based on the original KOTL (but just in a new jacket; a different biome or something else). However, there's also one which doesn't look like the original one at all.

The competition ended two weeks ago and it’s time to share the results. We picked three winners as well as three “runners up”—maps which we thought were amazing too, and deserve an honorable mention. Without further ado, let’s get to the victors:
#1

SINKHOLE

The #1 arena is Sinkhole, built by Froyd. We thought this KOTL had a perfect blend of gameplay and aesthetics, managing to both look good but still have good playtime. Most other submissions tended to focus too much on either aesthetics or gameplay too much, which caused the other part to suffer. With Sinkhole, Froyd managed to balance the two perfectly!
#2

ROUNDHOUSE BRAWL

The second best KOTL is Roundhouse Brawl, by Llamaman5000. Just like Sinkhole, it excels in both gameplay and aesthetics. It’s a small and cozy map with simple yet challenging gameplay.

#3

ARENA

The third best KOTL is Arena by TheWeakGuy48. It was one of the only submissions which clearly resembled the original KOTL theme and we really like that! Apart from that, the arena also sports some very interesting features to make gameplay extra fun. We think it’s great!

All three winners will get their rewards shortly!

Of course, we could only award the three very best, but we’re still really impressed with all of the other submissions! Twenty-three maps were submitted and almost all of them were very good. In fact, three of them were so good that we thought they deserve an extra mention:

Flank, built by our very own Refrigerated, is another example of an original KOTL-like arena done well. It doesn’t overcomplicate things and really complements the RoF lobby.

City of Fire, created by Tamzies, is a really unique arena and overall just really well built.

LavarnianTemple, just like all of Swift’s other maps, looks absolutely stunning. Although its gameplay may not be the absolute best, we still think it’s a really great arena and players will love it.

The other entries that were submitted for the competition were also really good too! So good, in fact, that we decided to accept all submissions but seven! Here are the other accepted maps (authors listed by forum name):
  • Portal by Runemen4
  • Volcanic Eruption by crystalcraft321
  • Big Hill by ShadeSlayer98/w92
  • Lak by froyd
  • Unnamed by Unusual_Dood
  • SnowCold by D2theJ
  • Stonedour by JtTorso
  • RandomWaters by Swift_Siren
  • TurtleMania by Swift_Siren
  • Colosseum by Swift_Siren
All things considered, we think this competition has been very successful and we would definitely like to do similar things in the future. Thank you to everyone who participated! Even if your map didn’t win, if it got accepted it’ll still get implemented into the KOTL rotation and played by everyone.
