Was the bar of metal an exploded cell phone battery due to the heat? I know those things expand and explode when exposed to extreme heat, and they can definitely kill someone.

They would also keep a relative 'bar' shape, too. There's my best guess! x)

Dehydration.

Also, maybe he heard the phone ring, but both the bar and phone were laying behind him out of sight. Since he was in such a hurry to answer it, he accidently picked up the bar of metal and slammed it against his head, killing him.

Also, if we want to take the direct approach to the question "What happened to him"-- He died.

He was somehow using the metal pole with his cell phone to get (or improve) a signal, which, consequently, caused him to get struck by lightning and die.

I'm on the airport's free Wi-Fi, one last forums check before I leave. :3
The answer to the riddle is that th 'island' the person is on is a traffic island. He was texting while going across the road (like an idiot) and he got hit by a car - the metal bar was the bullbar of the car that hit him, which flew off with the collision.

I have a green room.
Inside the green room, there is grass but not bushes.
Trees but not mountains.
Puppies but not dogs.
Kittens but not cats.
Raccoons but not bears.
Green but not red.
Yellow but not blue.
Pillows but not cushions.
Beers but not wine.
Why?
