Problems Playing

Hey guys. I just introduced my friend to zombies, and he tried to register an account, but it says he needs to buy Minecraft in order to have a username. Is this a recent change? Because I haven't bought Minecraft, and I have a username. What does he need to do in order to play classic multiplayer?

I believe we've made a modification to the server so people can just log-in with their emails. I may be wrong though. Try it. WinX64 feel free to correct me.
