It seems that SMP is dead even faster compared to the previous two iterations (Kami's Realm, Legacies of Primordia). What happened and why?

Staff burnout and subsequent lack of new features and quests.

Aelonia was last settlement to apply for something - no one applied for something after them.
Edit: It was Last Bastion that applied as in last application - it was in February.

I'd like to add that after February was when SMP started to die off, if you look at the playercount compared to the beginning of January.
