Since I joined in Summer 11' it'd make sense that I've never heard of the Classic Build server. I was talking to onfire37 and we were talkin bout classic not being a populous. Then he said something about 2/4 classic servers being shutdown. I only knew of TNT so I asked him and he said there was a freebuild server that was closed in early 2011 to make way for a premium server. I'd just like to know a little more about this server as I can't find any pages on the wiki or anything about it.
Also the reason I'm posting this, is because I'm actually a little shocked that I never even heard of this old server before. I actually think it'd be kinda cool to have it re-opened, even though classic isn't as big as it used to be I'm sure a ton of people would play it.
From what you guys have said I guess the suggestion for it has already been said. Which isn't really all that surprising.
1. Has the idea or a very similar one been suggested before?
This one should be a no-brainer, but experience on other forums has convinced me that it probably isn't. Use the search tool and make sure you're not beating a dead horse.
Which means, this idea has been suggested multiple times in the past and denied. So sadly, a classic build server won't be returning to our community.
That being said, I too would like to know a bit about this server too, as it seems interesting! I'm sure davidjl123 can info-spam us, not entirely sure who else would know a ton?
Build server introduced somewhere around Sept 2009 - was just like any other freebuild server.
Was around for about a year and a half.
PixelEater and Redshift developed it. (FontPeg and Asierkierka may have helped)
The Head Controllers there, Pandabear (Youngest Director ever, and a girl). Nibbsy, who is still around. Evilgrim served there too. Erm, a few others that I cannot recall. (Oh and Yuck)
Server had a lot of instability issues back in the day with it saying up and having uptime. I really just used the server to chat with people and relax. Was TheOnes second server to be added.
Malcovent soon after ended up running the CMP server after Classic Build was gone. CMP was removed, Buildbox came along with UB, Matt Allen, Iguana, Malcovent, Uhtr5r, Yuck running it at different times. Still around today with Malc as the director.
I was never actually there when the build server was here, however, there are some things I know about it:
1. I believe it was around when lava started, or a little after. I have no idea, though.
2. If you're saying it shut down to make way for a premium server, which was CMP. CMP was shutdown as Legends of Primordia, a SMP and CMP server mixed together, opened up. It shut down after a few months, and then BuildBox opened up from what I remember.
3. I very much doubt there'd be a good reason for it to come back up. Classic is slowly dying out, and there are usually only around 5-10 people on Lava and Zombie. There are also a lot of freebuild servers, so there would be even less of a chance that it'd have people playing on it. So, I doubt the build server would come back, and seeing we already have a better one (BuildBox), it would just be a waste of VPS imo. I also believe this was already suggested, so no.
Ah well thankyou for all your input. If anyone else is reading this and knows more information then I think it'd be of use to post below. Also if anyone happens to have any old screenies? That'd be golden!
The name of the server was: [Blocktopia] Build Server
Before, it was called: TheOne's Build Server
THE STORY/EXPLANATION:
[Blocktopia]/TheOne's Build Server was just your typical build server. It was created sometime around September 2009. (I could have sworn it was late September 2009, or around September 20, 2009.)
Basically, for almost all its history, it mainly had a guest world called "main."
When you spawned, there was a very huge message telling you commands and whatnot:
You built something pretty darn good. An op+ would check your creation, and if it was good enough, you were promoted to Builder.
Builder+ could build on many other worlds. Most of the time, there were "flatgrass" worlds, where the map is, well, flat grass.
Other worlds such as "ocean_build", "mountain_build", and "pixel_art" were around too.
But, you, the Builder, would sometimes think that wasn't enough. Your next goal: Advanced Builder.
Advanced Builder was the equivalent to Trusteds. They could warn and kick, just like Trusteds can. If you were to be promoted to Advanced Builder, you had to make an application. But, I was one of the few people who did not make an application. I was promoted to Advanced Builder on August 16, 2010.
The Build Server was run on MCSharp, a type of custom server software. It ran into instability issues, and on mid September 2010, poof. It shut down for a while, after going through many other alternative server softwares.
On November 2010, the Build Server finally started up again, on MCLawl this time.
I was promoted to Operator on November 19, 2010.
If you thought Operator wasn't enough, you could go for Gentleman.
Getting Gentlemen was hard. You had to be a very good builder, like, Guinessis standards.
On February 2011, the Build Server finally ran its course.
CMP replaced it, and the Build Server was no more.
I hope you have a very good idea about the Build Server.
I have an ENTIRE folder of screenshots from the Build Server.
Here are some:

Also, here's some staff lists of the Build Server:
Ooh, I remember the Classic Build Server. (I was an Op there!) It was started a bit after TO got control of the lava server from someone else (I forget who.)
It was loads of fun, and Panda, Nibs, and Grim were all Head Controllers (Director was not a rank back then!) at the time. (Evil & Panda left because of drama.)
It'll never be back, and for good reason I'm afraid. It was loads of fun, but Minecraft has moved on.
Wow David, I knew you'd comment on this. Thank you a lot. That's pretty good. I wouldn't mind seeing a forum topic for screenshots on that server. That info is hard to get. Since there's no wiki's or anything on it.
What can I say? Although I musn't have spent more than 15 hours on the server all up, the sessions I had were very small. So it feels like I came on a lot. xP
I have some screenies as well, Maxisl getting Operator, giving SMB the idea to make the Zombie map Lunch, some stuff like that. To rank up, I built a gigantic Big Mac. Heheh and when I was done I called to Xrat to give me constructive criticism, and he told me there was something a bit wrong with it. I was stumped, I kept asking stuff like, "What, has it got more pickles"? or "Is the meat patty too thick?" After like ten minutes of him probably laughing in real life, I finally realised I'd just built an ordinary one-decker burger, not a double-decker like the Big Mac.
Also, when someone wanted to build a map, there were two things they could do: one, if they were Adv+, they could go to their own map. Good for them. Two, if you were a lowly Builder- peasant *cough*, you could go to the appropriate subforum, make an application about the map you want to make (like the name of the map, what server, etc.) and one 64x64 space in the gigantic Map Factory map would be given access for you to use. I think Nill's build server has that too, from memory.
Oh, and ocean_build was awesome too. Very, and I mean very, faint memories of it, but I really relished the idea. It was basically a huge map of water with some sandy hill-type things at the bottom, and building and destroying was no-holds-barred (except for griefing others' stuff, of course.)
Also, as you would imagine, the server's list of banned people was like three times as long as Lava's. And that is really saying something lol
That's about it from me, I'll come back if I remember any more.
Back during the TO era, (TO = TheOne) TheOne was the owner. I'm pretty sure GmK hosted the servers, but TheOne owned them. After TheOne left (not sure about the details on him leaving), the servers were adopted by the community and its Head Admins, giving birth to Blocktopia. As TheOne was the owner, he paid the bills to keep the servers up and running. As the community now runs itself, the Head Admins have no obligation to pay the fee, and so that's what donations are for - they pay for what TheOne used to pay.
Crystal clear? From the day I first clicked on the link to TheOne's Zombie Survival. The first time I ever had interaction with Blocktopia. July 13, 2010.
The One's Build Server is the first server in which I became an operator probably sometime in June or July of 2010.
Here are some notable and trivial memories I have of that server:
-By the time I became an Operator on the build server, 9-10 others were also promoted (some names I remember are Naterger, UltimateBudgie, and possibly tim0123456789).
-Once, a group of Minecraft members from a certain community (probably about 10-15 of them joined at the same time) came on the server. I believe Malcovent and other staff members were on the alert in case they came on the server to do a mass griefing. Instead, these players built themselves a road and several other things and walked on the path like it was a parade. After they were done, they took down everything they built, said their goodbyes and were never seen again (to my knowledge anyway).
-The build competition of the summer of 2010. Inon ultimately won the competition with a man coming out of the water; breaking a ship into two.
-Someone griefed my entry in the same competition. Due to the limitations of the build server software that was being use, the griefer was never caught (the griefer had to have been a staff member since only Advanced Builder or higher ranked users could modify the map). People have helped repair the damage that was done.
-I built a senate in one of the maps. There was a room with a podium and many seats. There, Megatron filled the room with the staff members of The One's. Shortly after, the server crashed.
-tim0123456789 and I built large fortresses in this one map (build_map4 or something?). Our creations took up probably about half of the map. Shortly after, Malcovent mentioned the two fortresses on the forums using the ಠ_ಠ emoticon.
-Inactive was the friendliest staff member I ever knew.
-I once built a bell tower on one of the maps. To make it tall, I had to make a rather large hole in the ground which exposed the underground section of the map. The hole I made eventually lead to the creation of a mall (which I believe was Mithrildor's idea?).
-There was this one particular time period when many users joined the server with sexually explicit names.
-The various times users made a Swastika and claimed to have been ignorant about Nazis or said that they made it because it was a symbol of peace or such and such (which is true but, of course, it is inappropriate to have on the server to say the least).
Until the TNT server came along, I was most active on the Build server.
Also 115Predator, it was Inon who won the building contest.
I do remember your entry being griefed by an op+.
Nobody really know who that mystery griefer was, because MCsharp did not have any command similar to /about or /b back then.
I remember seeing many people asking for a /whodid command.
And with the explicit names, I do remember a few.... (check that reserved post on the timeline thread.)
