Probably because "wpm" is vague and doesn't take in account whether you type long or short words. So maybe the test itself tries to make up for that somehow? Like averages out the word lengths or something.

Anyhow...

Ah, so after looking on that website's FAQ page, I found that wpm is actually based on five keystrokes equaling one word per minute.

So typing a long word would then technically count as two after typing five keystrokes into it.
