(while things have been discussed on this, we cannot add to them)

here's some of my suggestions for forum staff
  • have forum staff set up (usergroups?) as subforum-specific
  • controllers shouldn't have global perms- keep it in their section (if the rank is kept)
  • instead of having a traditional application process, for the first two or so weeks of the rank's implementation, allow volunteers to trial the rank for subforums and probably be surprised at the outcome; weed out the least efficient/dedicated ones
    • after it's somewhat stabilized, if wanted, use the application thingy
    • if forum staff have deletion perms do not allow permadeletions by default
  • allow said forum staff to come up with general rules and guidelines for subsection posting and moderating as opposed to following a generic ruleset for all forum activity
    • they'd probably still follow the general thing at the beginning, but differing environments may specialize later
suggestions/comments/reasons why this is stupid in replies below, and thanks for reading

Green - already being implemented. There will be users (not necessarily server staff) appointed as dedicated moderators for subforums, they will have the power to do everything upto and including banning users from that subforum ~ the jobs will vary but in general it'll be janitorial duties and promoting good content.

~ Orange: Soso, there'll still always be a generic ruleset as a catch-all, but we already have subforum rules (see forum games) and they'll be able to make subforum rules/guidelines - though naturally at the scrutiny of community admins.

~ Red: No, conflicts with the idea of giving them substantial power over a subforum. A number of issues with users able to volunteer without applying arise (banned users causing significant issues, ban evaders causing issues, people who are known for shitposting attempting to dictate the direction of a forum, etc.)

the idea with the application thingy was mostly meant to mean non-previous staff being able to be forum moderators.
in the past, whenever a new server was implemented, having been staff of previous servers was required to apply for the new ones.
as minecraft staff and forum staff have little-to-no relevant overlap, selecting forum staff from a user pool consisting solely of current/ex-staff would be detrimental to the concept.

perhaps i should have reworded - the "weeding out" meant only a few (2 or so) moderators per forum

glad to see this is already being worked on, and thanks for the fast response

When picking staff for Dusk of Discordia, I chose some people who had never been staff / SMP staff before. I can assure you that if we were to run applications, we would be looking for people who actively reported things, positive contributors to the forum and people with a level head - not just ex-staff.

That being said we won't need too many forum mods, we're not getting a full team, just a few people to manage the larger subforums and determine the ways they can best be used.

We need to know if the players are worthy to be on staff. If they volunteered and got the trail instantaneously, then chaos would arise. They have to be responsible, and know what they are doing. We cant let the forums be run by a bunch of immature people. I agree with what Malcovent said.
