You’re either here because you don’t know what DarkRP is, or you just got GMOD and you barely even know what GMOD is. This guide will help you out though! IF you are new to GMOD, I highly recommend you to read the detailed guide as it contains valuable information. If you want a smaller guide, just scroll past the spoiler.
DarkRP is a gamemode within garrysmod, that can mostly be described as a semi-serious roleplay gamemode, though things are exaggerated to make it more interesting / fun. There are a ton of things for players to do, and so many opportunities to make RP situations. DarkRP is currently the most popular gamemode in garrysmod, with over 3K+ playing! It attracts a ton of people and has kept the top for the past 2 years.
Basics
Once you join press F4 and a menu should pop up, you will use this a lot. You go to the jobs tab, and select a job you would like. Every job comes with a description that gives info on the job, and what it does. It’s not a very serious RP either, there's fun jobs / things that are somewhat out of place but add a nice experience to the server, so look at all of them!
What do I do?
Follow what your job states. Thief? Raid and Mug people! Cop? Arrest those Thieves! Are you a hobo? Make a little hobo base and sing for money! There's tons of jobs to offer different RP experiences, you decide what you want to do! Make sure you follow the rules of the job though!
Making Money
Money is essential to DarkRP. There are a multitude of ways of getting money, from money printing, to selling guns, to begging for it as a hobo! You will use money to buy better weapons, better defenses, and better guns. Each job has a way to make money, sometimes you just have to be creative. You can make more if you invite and play with friends!
Raiding
Raiding is something criminal classes do. A raid is where you break into another players base or the PD. You will find that these are common. These are common because it's a good way to make money. After you raid someone, you get to take everything in their base, money printers, drugs, guns, and anything else you can get your hands on.
Shops
Selling weapons / drugs / explosives can be dangerous work. It pays off though! Set up a shop in town and get customers to gain money, make sure to slap a tax on that product! Gun Dealer shops are legal, but Black Market and Drug shops aren’t, so be careful when selling!
Rule Breakers
If you ever have a problem with rule breakers, just type @message and it will send your message to all staff online. If no staff are online, take screenshots and send them to a staff member over the forums or discord. If it’s a staff member you’re having a problem with, please contact Hexical_.

Now that you know what DarkRP is, I’ll continue to the basics of DarkRP and how to play it. When you first spawn into the server, you will be a Citizen, which is just a normal job that can’t do anything special. There are two “main” job categories in DarkRP, which are Criminals, and Government.
Criminals, like a Thief, or Kidnapper, are jobs that are allowed to do illegal things without breaking rules (these could still be against the law), a good example being the job Thief. Thieves are allowed to own Money Printers, Raid, Mug, within our server rules, while if you were a Civilian, or Government job, you would be breaking server rules and would be punished. Though, all criminal jobs aren’t allowed to do the same things, like Thieves can raid, but can’t kidnap, while Kidnappers can’t raid, but only kidnap.
Moving onto the other main category, Government, which is in general just the Mayor / Police Force. In Government, you’ll have jobs like S.W.A.T, Mayor, Police Chief, etc. These jobs are meant to protect and serve as a normal Police Officer would do, you make arrests, call out warrants, make sure the everyone is following laws, etc. Government jobs live in the PD, where the mayor is located, if you are a government job, you can’t own a personal home. Along with the home, you also can’t own Money Printers, can’t raid, and other things criminals do. Government classes listen to the Mayor / Chief of the corresponding job.
Most other classes, like Gun Dealer, Hobo, Pet, etc, are labeled under as Civilians. There are also jobs like DJ, or Cinema Owner, where you can control a Club, or Cinema. Civilians can’t really do anything besides what they’re told to do. You are a Gun Dealer? Sell guns, but don’t go out and raid someone's base. Cinema Owner? Queue up some videos for your viewers, but don’t be basing with thieves! These jobs are considered working class, and should be treated as such. These jobs don’t get involved with raids, or any other general criminal activity. You are able to own money printers, unless the job itself specifies.
The premise of all these jobs is to simulate a roleplaying scenario where you are living in a dreary town full of crime and crazy things. There’s gonna be muggings, kidnappings, raids, shootouts. You may be a part of all this craziness, or you may be quietly sitting in your shop supplying the weapons needed to continue the mayhem! Ultimately, you choose how you want your character to be, and that’s what makes DarkRP fun!
What exactly do I do?
Once you spawn in, you should choose a job that you want. There are over 30 jobs to choose from, so you have a lot of choices! You can pick a class that steals, kills, and mugs, or one that supplies music or videos to the public. You choose how you want to play, but make sure to choose the correct job and read it to make sure you won’t break any rules.
If you chose a Government class, you should report to the PD. The PD is the home of all Government jobs, including the Mayor. The PD also contains two items, one is the Undercover NPC, which is meant for Undercover Cops, they can disguise as other jobs at this NPC. The other is the Bank Vault, which slowly collects money over time, and can be raided, so you must protect the Bank Vault at all costs. If nothing is going on, patrol around town and make sure nothing fishy is going on, but don’t break any rules!
If you didn’t choose a government job, you will most likely go and buy a house. There are multiple houses to choose from, varying from suburban houses, where you can lone wolf and easily defend your base from raids, to large warehouses, where all your buddies can hang out. Make sure when you buy a house that you buy ALL the doors, so no one else can buy them and get in. If you’re a supplier job like Gun Dealer, or Drug Dealer, your best bet would be to buy a shop, but you can also buy a house and build it into a shop!
Making Money
You will find that making money is a very essential part to DarkRP. IT is the main focus of the gamemode, and whoever has the largest sum of money will most likely be the person with the most power. A good way for a starter to make money is Money Printers, which you can buy from the F4 menu.Make sure to buy these in your base, and not within anyone's sight! Money Printing is illegal and people will report you. Money Printers spit out x amount of money every x minutes, and there are different tiers of printers that print faster. Players can easily setup a printer farm and easily make money while safely RPing, because the printers collect the money into storage and players collect them whenever they please. Money Printing is the most popular way of making money.
Another good starting way of making money is making a shop. I find this a highly underrated way to make money, as it encourages player interaction, is fun, and its an easy way to make money! There are jobs like Gun Dealer, Black Market Dealer, Drug Dealer, and more that you can RP as to sell products. Lets use the Gun Dealer as an example. You choose to be a Gun Dealer, which is someone who sells legal guns (unless otherwise stated by mayor). You will proceed to setup a shop, some places in town are pre-setup, but you can also make your own if you want. If you sell illegal contraband (Drugs, Explosives, etc.) then you can’t make your shop obvious!
Players with a little more money and courage can make money by raiding other players. I will get into depth what raiding is later, but to get the idea of it, just imagine a house robbery, except with some more powerful weapons, and your house can be super secure! Inside a lot of players bases are things that cost money, or even make money. Printers, Guns, Drugs, all these things will get you money and are valuable. Raiding someone is risky though, because you can lose what you have if you die, but its high risk high reward.
There are other small various RP ways to get money, like being a Musician and playing music, or being a Hobo and just begging for money! You are provided with an almost endless way of making money, so use your imagination!
Raiding & You
Raiding is something that happens a lot in DarkRP, whether you’re being raided, or you’re raiding. Raiding is not only fun and risky, but it’s challenging too. Sometimes you can come across bases that you just know have some good stuff in it, but it's literally got a maze of pathways. Participating in a raid isn’t hard, if you’re leading it just make sure to /yell raid, and if you’re joining in type /yell raid join, and after that you’re good to go! Lockpick that front door, bust some ass, and steal some names (and money).
Being raided can be a very stressful moment, because you know you have to confront the person that's coming into your house.When you’re being raided, make sure to get in a safe spot and take cover, preferably one with eyesight of your door. Make sure not to break any rules, like fading door abuse, when being raided, it can happen even on accident. The best advice to give is to stay calm, and be prepared always for a raid, you don’t want to be caught with your pants down.
Criminal Activities
There are other things that go on other than raiding too. Pickpocketing, Mugging, and Murder, among other things happen regularly in the server. You will have to always have an eye out for thieves and other criminals as they’re always looking for vulnerabilities. You can even be kidnapped and held for ransom, so watch out!
Fun Jobs
Sometimes you just want to have a little fun RP, and that’s alright. There’s tons of chill out RP opportunities. You could become a Cinema Owner and host movies. You could become a bartender and sell drinks and talk to people. There's even goofy jobs, like Spider-Man, and Pet. Play with whatever job fits your style.
Building Base
DarkRP maps come with prebuilt bases, but their defenses are terrible. Even 3 doors won’t stop a super dedicated raider, and it for sure won’t protect you from bullets. There’s tools available for you to harden defenses though. You can open up the spawn menu by holding “Q”. You will find props on the main page and to the right a little tab with tools, you will become very familiar with this menu, as it's used very often in gmod. You are able to spawn props through this menu and make defenses, along with important tools like fading door.

Rule Breakers
Since DarkRP is hectic and sometimes just downright crazy, people tend to break rules. It is always best to use your judgment when it comes to rule breaking, and how it should be handled. If you find two buddies killing each other just for giggles, don’t report them for RDM, it wastes staff time, and makes the players feel unwelcome. On the other hand, if someone is killing you over and over for no valid RP reason, then you should go ahead and report them.
Using @ is your best friend when reporting to somebody. Putting a @ before your message ensures that only staff can read it, and its in a bright green text so its noticeable against all the other text. If you use this, you will get a staff to you within minutes. You should always use this and not OOC for reports. Please do not use @ for useless stuff!
If you ever have a problem with DarkRP staff, you should contact the owner, Hexical_. He will deal with that staff member, and depending on the severity, punish them accordingly. This will all be kept confidential.
