With Elytra you can cover impressive distances
But you can extend your range twice with fireworks - just fly high up and glide down at steep angle:
If you have Unbreaking III on Elytra, then total max range could be even 8x times bigger before elytra breaks down.
With Mending you can fly indefinitely as long as you have fireworks or gunpowder and paper with you in shulkerboxes in enderchest.

Basically you could transport entire vault with you into far away places at once.
In Primordia you couldn't raid places if you flew into them using elytra.
As for Kami - elytra weren't a thing back then.
How will be elytra treated in SMP 10?

You can remember that 50 degrees down = maximum horizontal speed.
On unrelated note: If you have 3 pieces of armor with Fire Protection IV, then you are fireproof and highly resistant to lava - this mean you have plenty time to drink fire resistance potion, while your armor deteriorates and you run out of saturation.
This means Nether is much safer to explore in general.
I found out nice source of XP for mending stuff: Enderdragon farming.
You need 4x 7 glass + eye of ender (powdered blaze rod + enderpearl) and ghast tear.
With this recipe you can create End Crystals - place four of them on return portal in The End to summon enderdragon.
Endercrystals can be placed only on bedrock.
Still you can make minefields at bedrock layer on Nether and Owerworld.
