because our old fogies of the kinda ancient past decided that seasons are determined by Earth's yearly relations to the Sun, and not based on climate or weather (because otherwise winter would be the only season for polar regions, and summer the only season for around the equator... and in Texas...).

Winter starts when the nights are longest in the hemisphere (Dec 21st in Northern, June 21st in Southern), Summer starts when days are longest in the hemisphere (June 21 North, Dec 21 South), and the Equinoxes for autumn and spring are September 22nd and March 22nd in their appropriate hemispheres.
